Profiles of 2011 Kudos Award Winners!

The following are a few comments from our deserving Kudos awardees:

  • Award recipient, Col. Christine Ingle (Ret), was honored for her work with our wounded warriors who are pursuing new careers in the health care field. As a volunteer mentor, she identifies educational resources for our soldiers at Ft. Belvoir, Walter Read and Ft. Mead. Her ‘can do’ attitude is invaluable giving these soldiers the hope and promise of a new career. She is grateful to LifeCircle for “putting a light on this program”.
  • Award recipient Deborah Dodge has fought to receive needed support for her son for the past 14 years to no avail.Unfortunately, like so many in our community, her son’s unique needs seemed to fall through the cracks.Ms. Dodge states “People are finally hearing my story thanks to LifeCircle. It feels good today to feel hopeful once again.”
  • Award recipient, Inaz Eldarwish’s husband had this to say “There is no other program in Fairfax County that accepts severely handicapped adults like our sons who are not also mentally retarded.SPARC (Specially Adapted Resource Centers) is such a program. We are in the midst of the best people we have ever met”.

And, a few highlights of this years’ event:

  • It isn’t every day that a local non-profit’s efforts are recognized at the White House level. Joining Forces is a national initiative, housed in the Office of First Lady Michelle Obama, that mobilizes all sectors of our society to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned. During our event, we had the pleasure of reporting that Joining Forces has taken note of the hard work and enthusiasm of our Kudos award winners and the LifeCircle Alliances team.  We are profiled White House blog!
  • The Honorable Congressman Gerald E. Connolly presented a statement entered into the Congressional Record recognizing the recipients of the awards and applauding the efforts of LifeCircle Alliances.

LifeCircle in Our Community

web positiveagingcoalition6-11-11

LifeCircle met with keynote speaker, Washington Post columnist and best-selling author, Abigail Trafford, at a Positive Aging Coalition event entitled “Exploring the Bonus Years”. Pictured (l-r) are Dorothy Keenan, Positive Aging Coalition Board; Ms. Trafford; Christine Hyland, Executive Director, LifeCircle Alliances.  Ms. Trafford spoke about her recent best-seller My Time: Making the Most of the Bonus Decades After 50.

The Positive Aging Coalition, with the support of Fairfax County’s Long Term Care Coordinating Council (LTCCC), the Chesapeake Life Planning Network, and George Mason University’s Center for Consciousness and Transformation, is addressing the significant need for educating those who are transitioning into retirement and their “Next Chapter.” The Coalition provides opportunities for adults of retirement age to explore personal resources, attitudes, preferences, motivation, skills, and interests so that older adults can stay healthy, active, and connected to their families, friends, and communities as they transition into retirement.

Christine Hyland, Executive Director of LifeCircle Alliances, recently gave a presentation to the Fort Belvoir Retiree Council.  Council members had recently received a commendation for their work in support of military families.  Pictured (l-r) are Matt Dailey, Vice Chair of the Fort Belvoir Retiree Council; Christine Hyland; Jerry Musarra, Chair of the Fort Belvoir Retiree Council; and Hank Nelson.  LifeCircle wishes to thank Mary Ellen Knuti of OP3 for the invitation to these strategic partners.

During the presentation, Ms. Hyland announced the agency’s “Kudos for Community Caregivers” Awards program. This annual awards program recognizes outstanding volunteer caregivers in Fairfax County, the cities of Falls Church and Fairfax. Nominations for the caregiver awards are now being accepted by LifeCircle Alliances and will be presented at their second annual LifeCircle Alliances’ “Kudos for Community Caregivers” awards breakfast slated for September 26, 2011 at The Mason Inn on the campus of George Mason University.
